NTFS stores information about file names and directory structure at the beginning of the disk. This can cause additional wear on that area as seen in this screenshot of a PC-3000 surface verification. The blue line shows disk read performance from start to finish. The gradual drop in performance is normal for all hard drives as a result of the read heads being closer to the center of a spinning disk. The red markers on the horizontal axis near the beginning of the disk show unreadable sectors.
