The Main Boot region provides all the necessary boot-strapping instructions, identifying information, and file system parameters to enable an implementation to perform the following:

  1. Boot-strap a computer system from an exFAT volume.
  2. Identify the file system on the volume as exFAT.
  3. Discover the location of the exFAT file system structures.

The Backup Boot region is a backup of the Main Boot region. It aids recovery of the exFAT volume in the event of the Main Boot region being in an inconsistent state. Except under infrequent circumstances, such as updating boot-strapping instructions, implementations should not modify the contents of the Backup Boot region.
